Purohit General Stores

Purohit General Stores is right in the middle of the village area in Warje, near Yelchennahalli. It’s the kind of place where you can find almost anything you need for the house on a daily basis. We open up early in the morning because that’s when people are heading out and need their milk or newspapers. The shelves are packed with everything from soap and flour to small snacks and household bits. It’s usually a bit cramped inside because we try to fit as much as we can so nobody has to go all the way into the city for small things. We spend a lot of time chatting with neighbors who come in for one thing and end up staying for a ten-minute talk about the weather or the village. It’s not a supermarket with bright lights and fancy aisles; it’s just a regular store with wooden counters and bags of rice stacked on the floor. We do our own stocking and cleaning, so you’ll often see us moving boxes around or sweeping the front step when things are quiet. Some days are slow and we just sit by the door watching the world go by, but other times it feels like everyone in the village comes in at once. We don't have any big plans to change things. We just want to keep the shelves full and be here when someone realizes they ran out of sugar.
