Mauli Pan Shop & Sugarcane Juice

Mauli Pan Shop & Sugarcane Juice is located over in Kothrud at Fatehgunj 1. It is a small space but it works for what we do. The sugarcane machine makes a lot of noise when it is running, especially in the afternoons when it gets hot and everyone wants a cold drink. After the cane is delivered early, we have to peel it and get it ready. It is sticky work. Then there is the pan side of the business. All the different leaves and the little jars of supari and lime are kept ready on the shelf. People usually come by after they have had their dinner at one of the nearby places. Kothrud is a busy area with lots of families and students walking around. We see the same faces every day. Since the shop doesn't have much room to sit, people just stand around on the pavement and talk while they wait. A bin is kept outside for the husks. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a bit and we just wait it out in the dark. It is a simple life here. Keeping the counter clean is a priority because the juice attracts bees if we are not careful. My cousin helps me out during the rush hours. Nothing special happens here, just the juice and the pan. It gets dark early in the winter but the street lights in Fatehgunj stay on and people keep coming by until we close the shutters.
