Mahesh Steel Center

If you spend enough time on Airport Road, you eventually get used to the sound of the planes and the constant traffic. Mahesh Steel Center is tucked into 48/1 Suchitra Apartment. It’s a solid building, and we are quite close to the Sai Baba Mandir. You can often hear the bells from the temple in the mornings, which is a nice way to start the day. Dealing with steel is heavy work. We spend our time moving rods and sheets around, so there is always a bit of a metallic smell in the air and the sound of clanging. It’s a dusty business, no matter how much we sweep the floor. We have some grease on our clothes and calloused hands. Suchitra Apartment is a well-known spot, so people don't have too much trouble finding us. We don't have a polished showroom. It’s more of a warehouse feel where the inventory is the main thing you see. People come in looking for specific sizes and we cut things down to what they need. We have an old ledger where we write things down, though we use the computer too. It’s a practical, no-nonsense kind of place. We don't do big sales pitches. A customer comes in, asks for the price, and we tell them. That is how it has been for years. We just keep the steel moving and wait for the next truck to arrive.
