The 2nd Main Road in Sangavi gets really busy around 1st Block, especially in the evenings. That’s where we are, tucked in between a chemist and a small tea stall. The shop is small, so we have to stack things pretty high. If you want something from the top shelf, we usually have to get the stool out. It’s a bit of a squeeze when more than three people are inside at the same time. We spend the mornings cleaning the glass jars and sweeping the front step because the road dust is relentless. There is a small fridge in the corner that hums way too loud, but it keeps the drinks cold so we leave it alone. Most of our day is just handing over small change and bagging up rice or flour. We know the kids from the apartments nearby who come in for biscuits after they finish their classes. It’s a simple routine and it keeps us busy from morning till night. Sometimes we run out of something and have to tell people to come back tomorrow, which happens more than I’d like to admit. The lighting isn't the best in the back, but we know where everything is by heart. It’s just a local market for the folks living on this side of the bridge. Nothing fancy, just the basics and a bit of conversation while people wait in line. We don't have a big staff, just us making sure the shelves don't stay empty for too long.
