Janata General Stores

You can find us in Bibwewadi, right near S V Road. It is a small corner shop that has been here for a long time. We have everything from soap bars to bags of rice. The shelves are made of wood and they have bowed a little over the years from the weight of the jars. We do not have a lot of space, so things are piled high. When someone wants something from the bottom, we have to move three other things first. The floor is swept every morning but the dust from the road always finds its way back in. We have a small television near the ceiling that is usually on the news. Customers come in and talk about the weather or the traffic while they wait for their items to be packed. We use newspaper to wrap some of the dry goods. The door frame is a bit low, so tall people have to watch their heads. We do not have fancy labels or bright lights. It is just a couple of tube lights and the sunlight coming through the front. We know most of the people by their names because they live in the houses right behind the shop. Sometimes we run out of things and have to tell people to come back tomorrow. It is a slow, steady kind of business in a busy part of town.
