Our workshop is at 63 Khadki, and it’s been the home of J K Steel Furniture & Fabricator for many years. It is a noisy place, as you would expect with all the metal work going on. We have welding machines, grinders, and big sheets of steel leaning against the walls. The air usually has that sharp smell of hot metal and sparks flying around. I’m usually there in my overalls, and the rest of the crew is the same. We don’t have a separate office or a quiet place to sit; we just talk over the noise of the machines. If someone wants a cupboard or a gate made, they come in and we show them what we are working on. It’s very hands-on stuff. Khadki is an old part of the city, and our shop fits right in with the other workshops on the street. We don’t do any fancy marketing. Most of our work comes from people walking past and seeing what we are building on the sidewalk. The floor is always covered in metal shavings and bits of wire. It’s hard on the hands and the back, but there is something good about making things out of heavy steel. We just take one order at a time and try to get it done. It’s a simple life of cutting, bending, and joining metal until it becomes something useful for someone's home.
