I’ve been running Bablu Paan Shop in Bavdhan for quite some time now. When I first started, Bavdhan wasn't nearly this crowded. Now there are new buildings everywhere and more cars than I can count. My shop is tucked away in a corner where the shade hits in the afternoon. That’s lucky because it gets really hot around here. I keep the leaves wrapped in a wet cloth so they stay fresh and cool. If they dry out, nobody wants them. Most of the people who come here are regulars. They don’t even have to tell me what they want anymore. I just see them coming and I start folding the leaf with whatever they like inside. Sometimes the kids from the nearby apartments come for some chocolate or some small snacks I keep on the side shelf. The shelf is a bit rickety and I had to prop it up with a piece of brick. It works fine for now. The radio plays some old songs in the background to keep me company when it’s quiet. Usually, the evenings are the busiest. People get off work and just want a minute to breathe before heading home. We talk about the weather or how much the price of everything is going up these days. It’s not much of a place, just a few square feet, but it’s mine. I stay open until late at night.
