We’ve been at this spot in Kothrud 1/105 for many years. Annapurna Market isn’t a very large place, but we try to keep it full. Every morning begins with unloading the crates of fresh stuff that come in. It’s usually loud out on the street by then. We have all the basic things people look for, like grains and household cleaners. The shelves are a bit narrow so you have to watch your elbows when it’s busy. Sometimes the light in the back flickers, but we’re used to it. Dealing with so many different people every day is interesting. You see the same neighbors every week buying their monthly rations. We don’t have fancy uniforms or a big office. It’s just us behind the counter handling the cash and bagging things up. Some days are very slow, and we just sit and watch the traffic go by outside. Other times, everyone comes at once and it’s a bit of a mess. We try to keep the pulses and spices in the right bins so nobody gets confused. It’s a simple life running a market like this. We don’t use any computers for the bills, just the old ledger books and a calculator that has seen better days. It works for us and the people who live around here seem to like it that way. It’s just a normal part of the street.
