Amit General Stores

You can find Amit General Stores at Haveli Makarpura, right at P O Moshi. It’s a typical corner shop where we sell just about everything a household might run out of. I spend my mornings checking the crates of milk and making sure the bread is fresh. The shelves are packed with everything from laundry soap to jars of local pickles. It’s a bit of a squeeze when more than three people are inside at once. I know most of the kids who come in after school for a small packet of biscuits or some candy. They usually have a few coins clutched in their hands. The Moshi area has grown a lot lately with all the new apartments, but our part of Makarpura still feels like an old village. I have a small wooden stool behind the counter where I sit when it’s quiet. The radio plays some old songs in the background. My ledger is always open because some of the regulars pay at the end of the month. It’s a system built on knowing people for years. The front door stays open all day to let in some air, though it also lets in the dust from the road. I keep a cloth handy to wipe down the jars every afternoon.
