Amar Super Market

This shop is on Saki Vihar Road, specifically the Talwade Behi area. It’s a long road and there is always a lot of dust. We spend a lot of time cleaning the glass jars. We call it a super market but it’s really just a big shop with everything squeezed in. We have toys hanging from the ceiling and buckets stacked by the door. It makes the place look smaller than it is. The floor is grey stone and stays cool even when it’s hot outside. We have a fridge for curd and milk that leaks a little bit of water on the floor. We put a rag there to catch it. People come in from the main road looking for all sorts of things. Sometimes we have it, sometimes we don't. We try to keep a good variety. The Saki Vihar Road traffic is loud all day and night. We get used to the horns. My cousin helps me with the heavy lifting when the grain trucks come. We have to carry the sacks on our shoulders. It’s hard work. We don't have a fancy system for checking prices. We just remember most of them or look at the labels. It’s a bit chaotic during the evening rush when everyone is heading home. We just try to get everyone served as fast as we can. It feels like the day never ends until we shut the gate.
