If you head down Vadgoensheri Vani Villaas Road, you’ll find us near the Siddhivinayak Mandir. You’ll probably hear the saws before you see the shop. We’ve been making furniture here for a while, mostly beds, cupboards, and dining tables for families in the area. The floor is always covered in sawdust no matter how many times we sweep it up. We have a few finished pieces in the front, but most of the space is taken up by raw wood planks and workbenches. It gets hot in the afternoons, especially when we’re doing the polishing or staining, and the smell of varnish is pretty strong. We use simple tools mostly, along with some older machines that we’ve had since we opened. People come in with sketches on napkins or just an idea of what they want, and we try to make it work. It’s not like those big showrooms where everything is perfect and lit up; our place is a bit messy and loud. We usually have a pile of scrap wood in the corner that we give away to neighbors for firewood. The traffic near the Mandir can be a bit much on Tuesdays, so we usually try to get our deliveries done early in the morning. It’s honest work and it feels good to see a finished wardrobe leave on the back of a truck.
