If you know Ambedkar Path in the Khajpura area of Patna, you’ve probably been near where we work. We are tucked away in Chanakya Vihar Colony at Pushpa Kumari’s place. It’s a residential area, so we try not to be too loud with the trucks early in the morning, though it doesn’t always work out that way. The office is basically a room with some old wooden chairs and a lot of blueprints rolled up in the corners. We do engineering work, which means a lot of measuring and double-checking everything. It gets pretty hectic during the monsoon because all our projects slow down when the ground turns to mud. Pushpa keeps the books in order while the rest of us are out at the different sites. We have been in Patna for long enough to know where to get the good materials and which roads to avoid during rush hour. There’s no big sign or flashing lights outside. We just have our name on the gate and people find us when they need something built. It’s a family-run kind of feel, even if it is a private limited company on paper. We drink way too much chai and spend half the day arguing over the price of bricks, but at the end of the day, the houses and walls get built. It’s a practical life, nothing more and nothing less.
