Jay Bharat Hair Cutting Saloon is located on R K Avenue, right on the busy Nala Road in Patna. This part of the city is always moving, and there is a lot of dust and noise coming from the road construction and the traffic. We spend a lot of time sweeping the front step to keep it somewhat clean. Inside, the shop has three chairs lined up against the main mirror. The mirror is quite old and has a slight tint to it that makes everyone look a bit more tanned. We keep our combs in a glass of disinfectant and the razors are always tucked away safely in a drawer when they aren't in use. The shop smells like a mix of cheap aftershave and the ginger tea we get from the stall next door. We have a small overhead fan that makes a steady clicking sound on every rotation, which you get used to after a while. In the afternoons, when it gets really hot in Patna, the shop feels like a little escape from the sun. We don't have any fancy lights, just a couple of long tubes that flicker once in a while before they stay on. People come in and talk about the news or the local politics while they wait their turn on the bench. We use those thin plastic capes to keep the hair off their clothes, though a few stray bits always manage to get through. It is just a regular place where we work hard.
