Machuatoli is a very crowded place in Patna, and my shop is right on A K Road. You can find Diamond Hair Dressing Saloon easily because it’s near the main crossing. The noise from the rickshaws and bikes is constant, but you get used to it after a few weeks. I have been cutting hair here since I was much younger. The mirrors are a bit spotted with age, but they still show you what you need to see. We have four chairs, and on Sundays, every single one is busy. People come from all over this part of Patna. I usually keep a jug of water in the corner for anyone who is thirsty. It gets very dusty on A K Road, so I have to wipe the chairs down every couple of hours. We do regular haircuts and shaves for the men around here. There’s no fancy music, just the sound of the scissors snip-snipping away. My regular customers don't even have to tell me what they want anymore. I just know. Sometimes the tea man comes by and we take a five-minute break to drink out of the small glass cups. It’s not a big business, just a way to make a living and talk to the neighbors. I like seeing the same people every month. It makes the days go by faster. We stay open as long as there is light on the street and people still walking by.
