Vikas Rice Mills

You can find Vikas Rice Mills right opposite the Naina Devi Mandir, near the Kot Road by Patiala Gate in Nada. It’s a very recognizable spot because of the temple. There are always people around, especially during festivals when the whole street gets packed with devotees and stalls. Our mill is a bit of a contrast to all that color, just a big grey building where we get our work done. The sound of the machinery blends in with the sounds of the street after a while. We’ve been at this location for a good many years. The floors are worn smooth from all the walking back and forth. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us who know the machines inside and out. Sometimes they break down, and we spend the whole afternoon with our hands covered in oil trying to get things running again. It’s a simple life, but it keeps us busy. We get all sorts of people stopping by because they saw our sign while going to the temple. We don't do much in the way of fancy talk. We just show them what we have and let them decide. The dust from the rice is everywhere, even in our hair by the end of the shift. But that’s the job. It’s what we’ve always done here in Nada, and we’re quite content with it.
