Rajan Kamal Rice & General Mill

Out here in Village Bahomajra, things move at their own pace. Our mill is right where you’d expect it to be, surrounded by fields that change color with the seasons. It’s mostly about getting the rice processed without too much fuss. We handle other stuff too, since it’s a general mill. People from the village stop by, sometimes just to see how the harvest is looking this year. It gets loud when everything is running at once, you can’t really hear yourself think. We’ve had these machines a long time. They need a bit of grease and patience to keep going, but they do the job. My cousin helps out with the books, though mostly we are out on the floor. It’s dusty work. You go home with grit in your hair and clothes that smell like toasted grain. The yard gets crowded when the tractors start arriving. We try to keep things organized but sometimes it’s just a bit chaotic. That’s just part of the day. We don’t have a big office or anything. Just a small room with a desk where we drink tea when there's a break. It's a living. We just try to get the bags loaded and sent off before the sun goes down too far. It's a lot of physical work but it's what we do and we are used to it by now.
