New Bharat Rice Mills

Down on Khansian Road in the Jagatpura area of Sanour, you will find our rice mill. A lot of people use the old Capital Theatre nearby as a landmark to find us since the roads around here can get a bit confusing if you aren't from the neighborhood. Our mill has been around for many years, and the building definitely shows its age with its weathered walls and old-style iron gates. The work here is heavily dictated by the time of year. When it isn't harvest season, the place is relatively quiet and we spend our time doing maintenance on the hullers and cleaning the storage areas. But when the crops start coming in, the whole yard fills up with trailers and the air gets thick with the smell of drying paddy. It is a very physical environment, with lots of heavy lifting and moving bags from the machines to the warehouse. We don't have a corporate structure or a big management team; it is just a handful of us making sure the mill keeps running. The noise inside can be a bit much, so we often stand outside near the road to talk. We have seen a lot of changes in the area over the decades, but the basic process of milling rice has stayed pretty much the same for us. It is just steady, practical work that keeps us busy throughout the year without any need for fancy words or big promises.
