Down here on Old Bus Stand Road in the Rajpura Township, things move at a pretty steady pace. Our shop is in Sunder Market, which is right near the Swaraj Tractor Agency, so there’s always a lot of heavy machinery and noise around. It’s a dusty part of town, but that’s just how it is near the bus stand. We spend most of our day sitting in the office or standing out front talking to the drivers. People come in looking for cars to take them to the city or maybe further out into the villages. It’s not a complicated business, just a lot of talking on the phone and making sure the cars are ready to go when someone needs them. We have a lot of regular customers from the neighborhood who just walk in because they know we’re always here. The walls are a bit bare and the chairs have seen better days, but it works for what we do. Sometimes the road gets blocked up with tractors or buses, and we have to scramble to figure out a different way for our drivers to get out. It’s a lot of small problems to solve every day, but it keeps us busy. We don’t do anything fancy, just make sure people get where they’re going. Living and working in Patiala like this means you get to know everyone on the street after a while, and that makes the long days go by much faster.
