Basant Rice Mills

Down on Samana Road, specifically in Village Ddhakraba, you’ll find Basant Rice Mills. It’s a bit out of the way for some, but it suits us just fine. The village is peaceful, though the mill itself is anything but quiet when the season is in full swing. We have a large open area where the trucks park and unload. It gets really muddy after it rains, which makes moving the grain a real pain. We have to be careful not to slip. The building itself is sturdy but it has its quirks, like the door that sticks if you don’t pull it just right. We’ve got a small group of guys who have been with us for a long time. We don’t talk much while the machines are running because you can’t hear anything anyway. We just use hand signals mostly. At the end of the day, we’re all pretty tired and covered in bits of rice husk. We wash up at the pump and head home. There isn't any big story to tell about us. We just run the mill and try to stay ahead of the work. The village life is slow, but the work at the mill is fast-paced when it needs to be. We just keep our heads down and stay busy until the sun goes down over Samana Road. It is honest work and it keeps us all going through the year.
