Our unit is located over in Shastri Colony, right off Jattal Road. If you’ve ever walked down that way, you know the sound of the looms. It’s a constant rhythmic noise that you just stop hearing after you’ve worked here for a week. We deal with textiles mostly, so there’s always bits of thread and lint floating in the air. We try to keep it swept up, but it’s a losing battle most days. The office part of the building is just a couple of rooms where we handle the billing and talk to the guys who come to pick up the fabric. It’s a bit noisy, but we like it that way because it means the machines are running. Jattal Road can get really jammed up with rickshaws and carts, so we usually try to get our big movements done early in the morning. We’ve got a small crew, and most of the guys have been with us for years. We know each other's families and what’s going on in the neighborhood. It’s not a corporate environment by any stretch of the imagination. We wear comfortable clothes and don’t mind getting our hands a bit dirty. When the power cuts out, which happens now and then, everyone just takes a break outside until the generator kicks in or the lights come back on. It is a simple life of making fabric and keeping the machines going.
