Jolly Ice & Cold Storage

We’ve been running Jolly Ice & Cold Storage at A-18 in the Lawrence Road Industrial Area for a long time. It’s a busy part of town and there’s always a lot of movement on the street. Making ice and keeping things cold is what we do every day. The floor is almost always a bit wet from the melting ice, so we all wear rubber boots. It’s a noisy place with the compressors running 24 hours a day. We have the big blocks of ice that need to be moved with hooks. It’s hard work on the back, but we are used to it. The cold storage rooms are stacked with whatever the local vendors need us to hold for them. We don't have a receptionist or a lobby. If you need someone, you usually have to shout over the sound of the machinery or go find someone in the back. The walls have some stains from the dampness, but that’s just part of the business. We get a lot of trucks coming in early in the morning to pick up ice for the markets. It’s a simple life at the shop. We drink a lot of tea to stay warm after being in the cold rooms. We just keep our heads down and make sure the ice is ready when people show up. The cat from next door usually hangs out on the loading dock when it's sunny.
