Being in Chandni Chowk means it’s always loud and crowded right outside our door. Our place, Smv Agencies Private Limited, is tucked away at 1862, Mahalaxmi Market inside the Bhagirath Palace building. If you know the area at all, you know how hard it is to move around some afternoons when the carts and rickshaws are everywhere. We’ve been operating from here for quite some time now. We handle different agencies and various goods, mostly just moving stock from one place to another for our customers. The building is quite old, and the stairs are narrow and a bit steep, but it’s right in the heart of the trade district. Every morning we open up the metal shutters and start looking through the lists of what needs to go out that day. It gets pretty chaotic during the festival seasons when everyone is ordering at once and the phone never stops ringing. We don’t have a flashy showroom or any of that polished marketing stuff. It’s mostly just shelves and cardboard boxes piled up to the ceiling. My desk is near the back where it’s a little quieter, though you can still hear the rickshaw horns outside all day. We deal with a lot of regular people who have been coming to this market for twenty years. It’s honest work. We try to keep things organized, but in a place like Mahalaxmi Market, things just happen at their own pace.
