Naya Bans is a very tight squeeze for anyone visiting. Our shop, number 6359/C, is right in the middle of the Beedi Market area. It is always crowded with people pushing past each other to buy things. We have glass jars filled with all kinds of local candies and sweet biscuits. The neighborhood kids love coming in after their school is over. It gets extremely hot in the summer because the market is so dense that there is no breeze at all. We have a small fridge for cold drinks but it really struggles when the temperature goes above forty degrees. The shelves are packed with all sorts of snacks and packets of chips. We try our best to keep everything organized, but it is hard when new deliveries arrive and there is nowhere to put the boxes. Most of our customers are locals who have been living around here for decades. They know exactly where we keep the goods. The Beedi Market has a very specific smell of tobacco and old wood, mixed with the sugar from our shop. We spend the entire day standing behind the wooden counter, bagging up sweets and counting out change. Sometimes we sit on a plastic crate when the crowd thins out for a few minutes. It is a busy life at Shop No 6359/C but it is what we know.
