Our place, Rice (India) Exports Pvt. Ltd., is right in the middle of the action at 5587, Lahori Gate. We are up on the first floor in Maya Bazar. If you’ve ever been to this part of the city, you know how crowded it gets. There are bags of grain everywhere and people shouting over the noise of the trucks. The smell of raw rice is pretty much stuck in the walls here. We’ve been in this spot for a long time. Our office is small, and we usually have samples of different types of rice sitting out on the tables. It can get a bit dusty with all the grain moving around, but that’s just part of the trade. We spend most of our day talking to farmers and shippers. It’s a lot of back-and-forth on the phone. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a bit, but we just keep working. We don’t have a website or anything like that. People just know where we are. We have a few old wooden desks and some chairs that have seen better days. It’s not a fancy corporate setup. We just focus on getting the bags loaded and sent to where they need to go. Every morning starts with a cup of tea and checking the prices. It’s a regular life for us here in the bazaar. We stay busy with the loading and unloading all through the week.
