Rahul Spices

Rahul Spices is found at 47/2, Ishwar Bhawan, which is along Mandir Gali in the famous Khari Baoli market. If you have ever walked through this area, you know exactly what it’s like. The air is always thick with the smell of ground chilies and turmeric, which makes almost everyone sneeze when they first walk in. We have been here in this narrow lane for many years, selling all kinds of whole and ground spices. The shop is filled with large jute sacks and plastic containers overflowing with seeds, pods, and powders. We spend a lot of our time weighing things out on an old scale for the local women who come to buy their monthly supplies. It’s a very crowded part of town, and we often have to dodge the laborers carrying huge bags on their shoulders. There isn't much room to move around inside the shop, so we mostly stand behind the wooden counter all day. We keep everything recorded in a thick book that my father used before me. It’s a lot of work to keep the dust and the spice powder from settling on everything, so we are constantly cleaning. We don't have any fancy displays or lights. People come to us because they know we have the real stuff from the spice auctions. It is a loud, messy, and very fragrant way to make a living, but it’s what our family has always done.
