Our office is at 441 on the first floor of Katra Ishwar Bhawan. If you know Khari Baoli in Chandni Chowk, you know how intense it can be. It is the heart of the spice trade and we are right in the thick of it. R P Spices India Pvt. Ltd. has been operating from this spot where the air is always thick with the smell of cloves, cinnamon, and red pepper. The building is old and has that specific character you only find in this part of Delhi. You have to walk up some worn-out stairs to get to us. We have bags of spices stacked up against the walls and there isn't much room to walk around. It is a constant buzz of activity with laborers carrying heavy sacks on their backs. We spend the day weighing things, checking the quality, and talking to traders from all over. The noise from the street below never really stops. It's a lot of grit and hard work, not like those clean offices you see in the newer parts of the city. We have a small desk where we keep our ledgers. The light isn't great, but we know the business inside and out. We eat our lunch right there among the sacks. It is just the way the spice business has been done here for generations. We finish when the market starts to wind down.
