Our business, P.L. Trading Corporation., is at 442, Katra Ishwar Bhawan, right in the heart of Khari Baoli. This is one of the oldest and busiest spice markets in the world, so it’s always an experience just getting to work in the morning. The air is thick with the smell of chilies, turmeric, and all sorts of other spices, which makes everyone sneeze if they aren't used to it. Katra Ishwar Bhawan is a historic building with narrow hallways and steep stairs. Our office is small and usually smells like the spices stored nearby. We deal with a lot of traders and wholesalers who come in from all over. The space is crowded with sacks of goods and small samples for people to look at. We don't have fancy office chairs, just some basic wooden ones and a big table where we do the paperwork. It’s incredibly noisy outside with the handcarts being pushed through the narrow lanes and people haggling over prices. We have to shout sometimes just to be heard over the noise of the market. There is no such thing as a quiet day here. We keep our records in big bound books and try to stay organized despite the chaos. It’s a very old-fashioned way of doing business, but in Khari Baoli, that’s just the way it has always been. We’ve been part of this community for a long time and wouldn't know what to do with ourselves in a quiet, modern office.
