Our business, Khushi Ram Laxmi Narain, is situated at 474, Khari Baoli. If you’ve ever walked through the lanes of Old Delhi, you know exactly what kind of place this is. It is incredibly crowded, loud, and smells like every spice imaginable. We’ve been in this same spot for a very long time, and the building definitely shows its age. There are cracks in the walls and the stairs are quite uneven, but it’s home to us. We deal in bulk commodities, mostly spices and various dried fruits. Our shop is filled with massive jute bags piled high against the walls. There isn’t much space to move around, especially when we have several customers in at once. We don’t have a computer system that tracks everything perfectly; we still rely a lot on our handwritten ledgers and our memory. It’s a very traditional way of doing business that hasn't changed much over the years. The heat in the summer can be quite intense because there isn't much airflow in these narrow lanes. We drink a lot of tea and just keep moving throughout the day. Traders from all over the country come through here to strike deals with us. It’s a chaotic environment, but there’s a certain rhythm to it that we understand. We aren’t trying to be a modern corporation. We are just a family-run shop in the heart of the city's oldest market, doing things the way they’ve always been done.
