Deepak Hosiery Works

We’ve been here in Punjabi Basti for a long time now. If you walk past the Clock Tower, you can usually hear the machines running inside Deepak Hosiery Works. It’s a busy spot and sometimes the noise is a bit much but that is just how it is. My father started this place and now we just keep it going day after day. We make all sorts of hosiery items here. Most days start early, around seven, when the first tea stall opens nearby. The workers come in and we get the knitting machines warmed up. It is a small space, really. Boxes are stacked up to the ceiling in the back corner because we never seem to have enough room for everything. Punjabi Basti is always crowded so getting thread delivered can be a real headache sometimes. The drivers hate coming down these narrow lanes near the Clock Tower. We just focus on the work. People stop by to ask for specific sizes or just to see what we are making this week. It is not fancy here. There is dust from the cotton and the floor is a bit uneven, but the machines are good ones. We spend a lot of time fixing the needles when they break. It’s just us doing what we know. Nothing more to it than that really. We just stay busy and try to get the orders done before the sun goes down and the market gets too crazy.
