About Wood Art Cane Furniture – Furniture in Mumbai
The shop is tucked away in Kawli Wadi at Amar Mahal. Wood Art Cane Furniture isn't a fancy showroom or anything like that. It is more of a workspace where you can see the actual work happening. The air usually smells like raw cane and sometimes a bit of polish when a piece is being finished off. We have been here in this part of Amar Mahal for a good number of years now. You will often see bits of cane shavings on the floor because sweeping up is a never-ending job. The front door is a bit heavy and sometimes it squeaks when you push it open. We have different types of chairs and stools piled up, sometimes reaching the ceiling if we’ve had a busy week of making things. It is a bit cramped inside, especially when we get a large shipment of raw material. On hot days, the fan just moves the warm air around, but we get used to it. People from the neighborhood often walk past and peek in to see what we are weaving. It’s manual labor, plain and simple. We don’t have fancy displays, just the furniture sitting where there is space. If you come by, you might see us working on a repair or starting a new frame from scratch. It’s a slow process, but that is just how cane work goes. We like the quiet rhythm of the day here in the wadi. It can be quite peaceful when the street noise dies down.
