About Vishwakarma Furniture Art – Furniture in Mumbai
We are based in Building No 501, Room No 43, over in Byculla on the Magadi Main Road. It’s tucked away parallel to Rama Mandir Road and not too far from the Kasturba Hospital. The room is always filled with a fine layer of sawdust that gets into everything, including our hair and clothes by the time noon rolls around. You can hear the sound of saws cutting through wood and the steady tap-tap-tap of hammers most of the day. We have various pieces of timber leaning against the walls, waiting to be turned into something. The smell of fresh wood and varnish is very strong here and stays on your clothes even after you go home. We work on a big wooden bench that has seen a lot of use over the years, with deep scratches and stains all over its surface. Vishwakarma Furniture Art is a small operation, so things can get a bit cramped when we have a big project going on. We use old-fashioned hand tools along with some power ones to get the shapes right. The light from the window isn't always great, so we have some bright bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Outside, the road is always noisy with people heading toward the hospital or the temple. We take our time with the sanding because you can’t rush that part. It’s a lot of manual labor and measuring everything twice.
