The office is tucked away in the Basant Apartments at 144 Cuffe Parade, way up on the 14th floor. It’s a bit of a trek if the lift is acting up, but the view from up here is something else. We are right opposite the G D Somani School, so we hear the bell ring and the kids shouting at recess time. It’s a bit of a landmark for people trying to find us. Being an advocate means there are books everywhere. Law books, case files, and stacks of paper that seem to grow on their own. We try to keep it neat, but when you are preparing for a case, things get messy. My desk is usually covered in yellow legal pads and half-drunk cups of coffee. It’s not just me here; we have a couple of people helping with the typing and the filing. Sion Koliwada is mentioned in our address too, though it’s a bit of a distance away. We spend a lot of time talking to people, listening to their problems, and seeing what the law says about it. It’s a lot of listening, honestly. People come in worried, and we just try to give them the facts. No fancy speeches or anything, just the law as it stands. It’s quiet in the office most days, aside from the school noise. We just keep working through the files one by one until the day is done. The elevator ride down is when I finally relax.
