Appasaheb S Desai is located at 59 Fort, on the 5th Floor of Ali Chambers. This building is right at Flora Fountain, which is one of the busiest spots you can imagine. We are also quite near the Central Bank Building, so there’s a lot of history and tall structures all around us. Being on the fifth floor means we have to rely on the lift, which has its own personality, especially on rainy days. The office inside Ali Chambers is filled with the kind of furniture that lasts a lifetime. We have heavy wooden desks and shelves packed with thick books and folders. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the years of work that have gone into it. Flora Fountain is always crowded with people rushing to work or tourists taking photos, but once you get up to our floor, things quiet down a little bit. We spend our time going through legal or administrative details, depending on what the day brings. It’s a very traditional atmosphere. We don’t go in for modern open-plan designs; we like our walls and our privacy. Sometimes the breeze from the sea comes through the windows if the direction is right. We’ve been at this address for a long time, and we’ve seen the city change a lot from our windows here at Fort. We just keep our heads down and work.
