Vijay Furniture has its workshop in the Military Compound area of Santacruz East, near Rahe Vasi Sang. It’s a loud, active place to be. If you walk by, you’ll probably hear the sound of saws cutting through wood or hammers hitting nails. There is always sawdust on the floor, no matter how much we sweep it up. We make all sorts of things, from simple stools to big wooden cupboards that take a few days to finish. The space is filled with planks of wood leaning against the walls and half-finished frames of sofas. We don’t have a big showroom with bright lights. Most people just come directly to the workshop to see what we are building. It’s a bit of a squeeze to move around when we have a lot of orders. The air usually smells like fresh cut timber and wood polish. We are just a small crew of workers who have been doing this for a long time. Our clothes usually have bits of glue or wood shavings on them by the end of the day. Santacruz East is a busy neighborhood, and the military compound has a lot of small businesses like ours. We just keep our heads down and focus on the wood. We don’t talk much while we work. We just take the measurements, cut the pieces, and put them together until the job is done.
