Uday Steel Furniture has been sitting here by the 90-Feet Road for a good while. We’re right in the Transit Camp area, near Dharavi. If you’ve ever walked down this road, you’ve probably seen the metal frames and chairs we keep out front. It gets dusty with all the traffic passing by, but that’s just how it is in this part of town. We make things out of steel because it lasts. It’s not about looking pretty, it’s about being sturdy enough for a home or a small office. The workshop is usually loud with the sound of welding or someone hammering something into place. We don't have a showroom with bright lights. Most people just stop by when they see something they like sitting on the sidewalk. My father started doing this and I just kept it going because it’s what I know. We use simple tools and work with our hands mostly. The neighborhood is always moving, and we just try to keep up with the orders people give us. Sometimes a customer wants a specific size for a cupboard, so we get the measuring tape out and figure it out right there. It’s a basic operation. We stay busy and we like being part of the local scene here. We usually have some chai around four in the afternoon when the sun starts to go down. The noise of the 90-Feet Road never really stops, so you have to speak up a bit when you're talking to us. We don't mind the chaos. It's been our way of life for a long time. People around here know they can come to us if they need a simple stool for their shop.
