The Floorsmiths

The Floorsmiths is tucked away in Building No 27 at Kandivali West. If you know where Atharva College is, we’re just near there, close to Lal Gate on Balaji Road. Our space, Flat 408, is usually filled with samples of all kinds. We spend most of our time looking at different materials and trying to figure out what will work for someone’s house. There is always a bit of dust around because that’s just the nature of the job when you deal with flooring and construction stuff. The building itself is busy, and you can hear the street noise from downstairs most of the time. We aren’t a big operation with people in suits; it’s mostly just us in our regular clothes, moving heavy boxes of tiles or planks around. Sometimes the lift in the building is slow, so we end up waiting a lot. We talk to people about their homes and what they want under their feet. It’s practical work. We have a small desk where we do the bills and a few chairs for when people come in to sit and look at the catalogs. It isn't a showroom like the ones in the malls. It’s more of a workspace where we get things organized. We’ve seen a lot of changes in the neighborhood over the years, but we’re still here doing the same thing every day. It’s a lot of lifting and measuring, but we don't mind it.
