Smt Kamla Mehta School For The Blind

The school is located on Dadasaheb Phalke Road No 160, right in the heart of Dadar East. Mumbai is always loud and fast, but inside our gates, things feel a little different. We’ve been operating here for a long time, focusing on kids who can't see or have very low vision. It is a big responsibility. Our building has those high ceilings you find in older Mumbai structures. We spend a lot of time working with braille and helping the students learn how to navigate the world safely. It's not always easy because the city outside is so hectic. The staff stays quite busy from morning until late evening. During lunch, the canteen gets pretty crowded and you can smell the food cooking from the street. We have specialized tools for learning, but mostly it is about the daily practice and the patience of the teachers. The students come from all over, some staying here and others traveling in. It can get a bit cramped when everyone is in the halls at once, but we make it work. We have a lot of old cupboards full of materials gathered over the years. It’s a practical place, nothing too shiny, just rooms where people are working hard. You can hear the trains from the station nearby if it’s quiet enough. We just take it one day at a time here in Dadar.
