About Shree I Mata Furniture – Furniture in Mumbai
If you go down to Girgaon and find Kharwa Cross Lane, you’ll see us at number 4. This is an old part of the city, and the lanes are quite narrow. We work with furniture, so the air inside is usually thick with the smell of wood and varnish. It’s a small shop, but we pack a lot into it. There are chairs, stools, and pieces of wood leaning against the walls. We spend our days measuring things, cutting, and putting pieces together. It’s a dusty job, and our clothes usually show it by the end of the day. We don't have a fancy showroom with bright lights. Most of the pieces we are working on are just sitting out on the floor. People walk in from the lane to see what we're making or to ask for a repair. We have our favorite tools that we’ve used for years. Sometimes the noise of the sawing gets quite loud, but the neighbors don't seem to mind. There’s usually a radio playing some old songs in the background. We keep a ledger for orders, but a lot of the details are just kept in our heads. It’s a traditional way of working, and we’ve been doing it this way for a long time. The space is a bit cluttered, but we know exactly where every hammer and nail is kept. That’s just how we do things here.
