You can find Shashi Fluoroplastiks over on Yusuf Meherli Road, right off Mohamed Ali Road. If you’ve ever been to this part of the city, you know how packed it gets. There are carts, bikes, and people everywhere, all the time. Our shop at number 179 is right in the thick of it. We deal with industrial plastics, which isn't the most exciting thing, but it’s what we know. The shop smells a bit like resin and old dust. Samples of tubes and sheets are stacked up against the walls. It’s a narrow space, so you have to be careful not to knock anything over when you walk in. The ceiling is high but the room feels small because of all the stock. We spend a lot of time measuring things with calipers and cutting pieces to size for customers who walk in. It’s hot in the summer because the breeze doesn't really reach into these narrow streets. We have a small fan that rattles on the counter. Most of our day is spent talking to regular buyers who have been coming to us for years. They know exactly what they want, and we know where to find it in the stacks. We don't use any fancy systems. We just write things down in our books and keep going. It’s a busy, noisy life, but it works for us. We're usually here until late at night.
