Down in Bhandup West, at Gala No 7, that’s where you’ll find S P Engineering Works. It’s not the quietest place to work, especially when the machines are all running at the same time. We spend most of our days surrounded by metal scraps and the smell of oil. It’s been our routine for years. We do a lot of fabrication and machining work. It’s heavy, messy stuff, but it’s what we know. The workshop isn’t much to look at, just a functional space where we can get our hands dirty. We take on various projects, some big and some small, depending on who walks in or calls us up. There’s usually a bit of a backlog of orders piled up on the workbench. We don’t spend much time on the computer; we’re mostly on the floor making sure the measurements are right. Sometimes the heat in the gala gets a bit much during the summer months, but we just keep going. It’s a local operation, nothing corporate about it. We’ve got a few guys who have been with us for a long time. We know how the machines sound when they’re working right and when they’re about to act up. People in the industrial estate know us as the place that gets the metalwork finished without any fuss. We just show up, do the labor, and close up for the night.
