Rakesh Engineering Works

Down in Malad West at Sayajigunj 44, you’ll find our workshop. It’s Rakesh Engineering Works, and it’s been here for quite some time. The floor is made of heavy concrete because the machines we use are quite heavy. There is always the smell of metal and cutting oil in the air. We wear old clothes because everything gets stained pretty fast. It’s a noisy place with the sounds of grinding and welding going on through the afternoon. We don’t have any air conditioning, just a few big pedestal fans that move the hot air around. People come to us with specific parts they need made or fixed. We spend a lot of time measuring things with calipers and marking pieces of steel. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to sit around and wait, which is just part of being in Sayajigunj. Our lunch breaks are usually spent sitting on plastic stools outside the front door. We aren't trying to be anything other than a machine shop. The ledger we keep our records in is getting pretty old and the edges are curled. It’s a straightforward way to make a living. We do the engineering work, talk to the customers, and go home tired. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from morning till night. We have a few old calendars on the wall that we haven't changed in years.
