My shop is number 10 in the Badal Bijlee Building, which you can find in the Chembur Vadgadi area. We are located quite close to Navjivan Society, so that’s a good landmark if you are trying to find us for the first time. As a furniture maker, the shop is usually covered in a thin layer of sawdust and the smell of cut wood is everywhere. I’ve been working out of this small space for a long time now. It’s not a showroom where everything is perfect and untouchable. It’s a workshop where things actually get built. I have my tools hanging on the walls and pieces of wood stacked up in the corners waiting for their turn. Sometimes the noise of the saws can be a bit much for the neighbors, but they are used to me by now. I spend most of my day measuring, cutting, and joining pieces together. It’s physical work and my hands are usually stained with polish or glue. People from around the society often stop by just to see what I am working on today. I don't have a big staff, just me and a couple of guys who help out with the heavy lifting. We take things one piece at a time and try not to rush the process. It’s a simple life in Chembur, making things that people will actually use in their homes.
