Oriental Machine Tools Company is tucked away on the first floor at 8 Nagdevi Cross Lane. If you know Mumbai at all, you know that Nagdevi is the place to go for hardware and tools. The lane is incredibly narrow and always packed with carts, delivery boys, and people looking for specific parts. Our shop is up a flight of stairs that are a bit steep and narrow, but it’s a classic Nagdevi setup. Being on the first floor gives us a little bit of a break from the noise on the street, but not much. We have shelves upon shelves of machine tools. Sometimes it’s hard to find a specific item because we have so much stock packed into the room. We also have a presence in Maninagar, but this Cross Lane spot is where we spend a lot of our time. The lighting inside isn't the brightest, but we know exactly where everything is kept. We talk to a lot of different people every day, from big contractors to small workshop owners. Everyone is looking for something specific. We don't have a website that’s updated or any fancy brochures. We just talk to the customers and help them find what they need. It’s the old-fashioned way of doing business in a very traditional market area. We’ve been here for years and the shop has a lot of history and dust on the rafters.
