Our shop is tucked away in Matunga East, right near the Balwadi Mothersa Masjid on VP Road. If you walk down 1st Parsiwada, you’ll probably hear the sound of us working before you see the sign for 290/37. Cane furniture is what we do here. It’s a lot of manual work, bending the wood and weaving everything together by hand. It’s dusty work and our hands usually have a few scratches, but that’s just how it is with cane. My father started this and now I’m running it with a couple of helpers. We don’t have a big fancy showroom. Most of the stuff we make is sitting right there on the floor waiting to be picked up. People around Matunga know us for being practical. We don't use expensive machines; it's mostly old-school tools and a bit of patience. Sometimes the rain makes the cane take longer to dry, which can be a bit of a headache for our schedule. The neighborhood is always lively, especially with the mosque nearby. You get a lot of people walking past and peeking in to see what we’re making today. We make chairs, tables, and sometimes custom baskets if someone asks nicely. It’s a small space, so things get a bit crowded when we have a big order to finish. We just keep our heads down and get the job done. It’s a decent living and we like being part of the community here. The tea from the corner shop keeps us going through the long afternoons.
