Our little preschool is right on Queens Road in Mumbai, inside the Roshni building. It’s a very busy part of the city, especially being so close to Charni Road station. You can always hear the cars honking and the general buzz of South Mumbai outside. The space we have at number 27 is small but we make it work for the kids. It’s an old building, so the ceilings are high and the windows are the heavy kind. We spend the morning doing basic stuff like rhymes and drawing. The floor is usually covered in crayons and plastic blocks by ten in the morning. Since it’s Mumbai, space is tight, so we have to be very organized with how we store everything. The staff here are just regular women from the area who like working with children. We don't have a big corporate feel at all. It’s more like a second home for the toddlers while their parents are at work. The humidity can be tough, so we keep the AC running when it gets too sticky. We don't have a big playground, just the indoor rooms where the kids can be safe from the street traffic. It’s a noisy, busy, and sometimes messy place, but that’s just how preschools are in this part of town. We just open up every day, handle the morning rush, and do our thing until it is time to close.
