KGN Sliding House is tucked away in Malad West on Bannerghatta Road, right at number 13. If you come by, you’ll probably hear the sound of a saw cutting through aluminum before you even see the door. The shop floor is usually covered in a thin layer of silver dust from the frames we spend all day cutting and fitting together. It’s a noisy place, and there are always pieces of glass leaning against the walls, so we have to be careful where we walk. I spend a lot of my time measuring things out and hoping the customer gave me the right dimensions for their balcony. We have a few samples of sliding tracks on the wall, but they are mostly there just so people can see how the rollers move. It gets a bit chaotic when we are trying to finish three different window sets at the same time. The tools are old and the handles are worn down from years of use, but they still do the job just fine. Sometimes the tea man comes by and we take a quick break sitting on the crates near the entrance. The rain is the worst part because we have to move everything away from the front so the metal doesn't get spotted. It’s just us working with our hands and trying to get the glass to fit perfectly into the tracks every single time.
