You can find Kalpesh Synthetics at 3 Kuntal, which is on Modi E Lbs Road in Ghatkopar West. It’s a busy neighborhood and our building is right in the thick of it. We work with synthetic materials, so there’s always a bit of a chemical scent in the air, but you get used to it after five minutes. The office is pretty old-school. We have big ledgers and desks that have seen better days. There’s a lot of talking on the phone with various suppliers and customers. We don’t have a website that does everything for us; we still do a lot of things by hand and by talking to people. It’s a very grounded way of doing business. The fans overhead hum all day long to keep the heat away. We have stacks of samples on every available surface, mostly different types of synthetic fabrics and yarns. Sometimes it feels a bit cramped, but we make it work. Most of the people working here have lived in Ghatkopar for their whole lives. We take our lunch breaks together and usually someone brings something to share. We don’t have a human resources department or fancy titles. Everyone just helps out with whatever needs to be done, whether it’s moving a heavy roll of fabric or answering the door. It’s just how we’ve always operated. It’s a simple, honest way to spend the work week and we like it that way.
