K N Sarvayia is based at 59 Lohar Chawl on M Sharma Marg. We are on the 1st floor of the Ahmed Building. If you’ve ever been to Lohar Chawl, you know it’s the heart of the electrical and hardware market in Mumbai. It’s a chaotic place with narrow lanes and people carrying heavy bundles of wire on their shoulders. Our office is up a flight of stairs, away from the immediate crush of the street, but you can still hear all the shouting and carts moving below. We deal with various industrial and electrical supplies. Most of our day is spent talking to contractors or shopkeepers who need specific parts. The building is quite old and has that classic Bombay feel with high ceilings and wooden doors. We have shelves packed with boxes and registers where we note down every sale by hand. It’s not the most modern way of doing things, but it works for us. The heat in the summer can get pretty bad since the building doesn't have much ventilation, but we just keep the fans going. It’s a tough, fast-paced environment where you have to know your inventory by heart. We’ve been part of this market for years and wouldn't really know what to do with ourselves anywhere else. It’s just how life is in the Chawl, busy and crowded every single day.
