The office is located at 9 Princess Street, right on the second floor of Devkaran Mansion. Princess Street is one of those classic old Mumbai areas where everything feels squeezed together and very busy. Devkaran Mansion is a sturdy old building with wide stairs that have seen a lot of years. Being on the second floor means I am slightly removed from the direct chaos of the street vendors and the heavy traffic below, but the sound still finds its way up. The space inside is functional, with old wooden cabinets and plenty of desks for all the administrative work that goes on here. Dealing with people in this part of town requires a bit of patience because everything takes time, from finding a parking spot to getting through the crowd on the sidewalk. Most of the day is spent handling documents and talking to visitors who have climbed up those stairs to see me. It is a very traditional atmosphere, nothing like the glass buildings you see in the suburbs. There is a lot of history in these walls, and you can feel it in the high ceilings and the way the light comes through the windows. It is a practical place to work, right in the heart of the city's trade district. Every day is different, but it always starts with the climb up to the second floor.
