Living and working at D-17, Indraprastha in the B. A. R. C. Colony feels a bit different than the rest of Mumbai. Out here in Anushaktinagar, it’s actually quiet enough to hear yourself think, which helps when you’re staring at a circuit board for three hours straight. I’ve been calling myself an Electronic Engineer for years, mostly because that’s what I do day in and day out. My workspace is just a part of the house really. My wife complains about the smell of solder drifting into the kitchen, but she’s used to it by now. I get a lot of people from the colony coming by with gadgets that have quit working. Being near the BARC area, everyone is pretty smart, so they usually have a good idea of what’s wrong before they even show up. I spend a lot of my time tracking down specific components. Mumbai traffic makes getting into the main markets a whole day's trip, so I try to order things in bulk when I can. The cabinets are overflowing with capacitors and resistors I might never use, but you never know. It’s a simple life, really. I wake up, have my tea, and start testing connections. Sometimes the rain gets so heavy the roof leaks a tiny bit near the window, but I just move my table. It’s just how things are here in Maharashtra. I don't need much more than a good lamp and a steady hand.
